What is Off-page SEO?
Off-page SEO focuses on improving your website's search engine ranking through external factors. While backlinks are a major component, brand mentions, social media, and local SEO also play a significant role.
Think of backlinks as votes of confidence from other websites. The more high-quality backlinks you have, the more authoritative your site will appear to search engines. It can be comparable to how you, as a consumer, seek external validation through reviews before committing to a purchase.
For more information about how it works and its difference to other areas of SEO, I refer you to my off-page SEO guide.
Pardott’s Off-page SEO Strategies
When it comes to off-page SEO, there's no one-size-fits-all approach. Factors such as business type, brand recognition, internal resources, and budget all play a role.
Ideally, I recommend a strategy that incorporates multiple methods. With a diversified approach, you can build a strong and natural link profile, which provides the best conditions for ranking in search engines
Journalist Sourcing
By becoming a source for journalists, you not only get the opportunity to build links or mentions, but you also expose your brand to a new, relevant audience.
This method is particularly effective when it comes to building links from strong domains. When it comes to frequency and quantity of links, there are other better suited methods, but few ways are as effective for acquiring links from well-known, established publishers.
As an SEO consultant, I act as an intermediary between you and the journalist. I coordinate the work and ensure that your voice is heard in media that benefits your link profile and is relevant to your target audience.
Paid Placements
Buying links involves paying a website for a link in exchange for a price that’s been agreed upon.
As a company, you'll always have an advantage with a dedicated link budget. This is primarily due to the opportunities that open up when it comes to controlling which pages and anchor texts you want to use. You gain a new type of leverage that is incredibly beneficial in link building.
However, it's important to mention that these types of link partnerships violate Google's guidelines and can even result in penalties. During my six years as an SEO consultant, I've only encountered one such case. The client had engaged in overly aggressive and careless link building, which led to Google flagging the site for manipulative tactics.
Paid placements are so common that it's easy to fall behind if you choose to avoid them, although I fully understand companies that choose to focus on other methods.
Digital PR
Digital PR involves pitching a story to journalists with the aim of getting it published along with a mention, or ideally, a link.
For this method to be effective, there first needs to be an idea worth acting on. The story must be interesting enough for journalists to want to pass it on to their readers.
Once the idea is in place, the next step is to create the content and finally reach out to journalists at relevant media outlets.
This method can generate powerful links and valuable publicity, but it can also be resource-intensive. There are no guarantees that the story will result in a link or even be published.
Content Creation
Content is a highly effective way to build links since it comes with so many other benefits. It allows you to establish yourself as an expert in your niche, drive organic traffic, and educate your target audience.
It works in such a way that if you publish high-quality content, other websites will want to link to you to provide added value to their readers.
There are certain types of content, known as "link baits," that have proven particularly effective at attracting links. Infographics, studies, and free tools such as calculators tend to spread faster than other types.
As an SEO consultant, I’ll guide you in the content creation process and make sure it has the best prerequisites for success.
Broken Link Building
A broken link means that it doesn't lead to the intended destination, resulting in a 404 error. Due to constant website updates, page removals, and address changes, it's common to accumulate broken links from external sources.
This is not only negative from a user perspective but also results in the loss of link equity that could have been gained if the page had been functional.
My role in this is to gather all broken links and redirect them to the corresponding page to ensure that all link equity is utilized.
Local SEO
Local SEO differs from the aforementioned methods as all activity occurs on a medium that you have full control over. Google Business is the most common platform, but Bing Places and Apple Maps are also used.
Local SEO is particularly important for businesses with physical locations such as stores, clinics, and restaurants as it helps them to be visible to potential customers in the local area who are searching for their services or products.
In this work, I ensure that your profile is set up correctly, follows current guidelines, and is optimized according to best practices to maximize its organic visibility.
FAQ
-
Absolutely! Links are important regardless of industry, but become particularly crucial in competitive sectors. For well-established brands with regular PR activities, other SEO areas may be higher priorities. However, if you are a new player with a newly launched website, links will play a major role in your success.
-
Links and off-page SEO as a whole are beneficial for all types of brands. However, how critical it is for your specific website depends on factors such as competition, your digital activities, and how much authority your website has already built up. An off-page analysis is a good first step to get an understanding of the situation.
-
As websites grow, they often accumulate spammy or toxic links. According to Google, their algorithms can detect and ignore these links, but if you're still concerned, you can use their disavow tool to specify which sources you want to distance your site from.
-
Dofollow is the default setting for links and signals to search engines to follow and pass SEO value to the linked page. You don't need to do anything special to create a dofollow link. Nofollow, on the other hand, is an attribute that must be explicitly specified. A nofollow link tells search engines not to follow the link or pass SEO value and acts as a recommendation rather than a strict rule.
-
Off-page SEO is important because it helps search engines understand how authoritative and relevant your website is through external signals. When a trustworthy and relevant website mentions or links to your page, it acts as a recommendation, which can improve your website's visibility in search results.
